REQUIESCAT IN PACE, BROTHER ROGER OF TAIZÉ

17. August 2005, 13:47 | by WD Milner | Full Article |

Roger Shutz, the ninety plus year old founder of the Protestant monastic movement in Taizé, France was assassinated today, apparently by a Romanian woman, who is being held by the authorities. Interestingly, at this point in time, no mention has appeared on any major news outlet, save a small article on the BBC and ABC (Australia) — a pointed commentary on what contemporary journalism considers “news”. Stories abound about murderers and politics but nothing about what is arguably one of the most influencial religious figures of the last century.

Brother Roger and his Taizé movement are of enormous significance in the religious world. They represent a re-discovery of monasticism by Protestantism. Acknowledged and accepted by Protestants, Anglicans and Catholics alike, the Taizé folk returned to the wellsprings of Christian piety and in the process created beautiful music which sounds much like traditional Gregorian Chant. Brother Roger was a luminary for bringing a worthy Christian ideal back from the darkness and enlightening the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. He will be greatly missed.
