MICROSOFT HOME SERVER PROBLEMS

12. April 2008, 20:42 | by WD Milner | Full Article |

Microsoft® discovered that many people had small home servers, and many more, especially those with large media collections, would like to have one and so it brought out Windows Home Server™. And then the gremlins appeared. Gremlins are pesky little things. The cause no end of trouble and mischief and no one is quite sure where they come from - least of all it seems Microsoft.

The problems began even before Home server was released to retail last autumn. There were reports of files mysteriously disappearing, apparently deleted, and data corruption. According to Microsoft this occurs during file copying, transfer or editing when using certain programs and the server has more than one hard drive. In other words - the majority of users’ situations. The problems seem to be associated with nine applications - seven of them from Microsoft itself. Relief is not likely to be quick in coming either as Microsoft doesn't expect to have a final fix out to the public before June.

The problems have even prompted aggrieved dismissal by otherwise Microsoft crusaders such as Volker Will who expressed his displeasure quite explicitly in his web log entry of January 16th.

In the meantime, for something more reliable, I could suggest trying the FreeBSD based FreeNAS.
