FIRST WEB IMPRESSIONS

12. July 2011, 14:40 | by WD Milner | Full Article |

The Web, in general, has the effect of helping level the playing field for businesses. A well designed website allows a small business to create an image, provide information and reach the on-line market as easily and effectively as a large corporation.

Potential customers often check a business's on-line presence as a first step to doing business. The most important thing for the web site to leave a good first impression is to design from the user's viewpoint. The following are five basic considerations a business should keep in mind when designing their web presence.

  1. Make the home page easy to read, with few links and bullet lists
  2. Make links clearly defined, too many links can be overwhelming and vague links confusing.
  3. Make the pages easy to find in searches by using keywords in the text strategically placed based on how prospective customers view your business.
  4. Maintain a consistent layout throughout the site so users don’ have to relearn how information is organized from one page or section to another.
  5. Ensure that any graphics used are appropriate, purposeful and download quickly.

A little forethought can have a considerable effect on the success of even the most basic web site.
