ECO-PATENT COMMONS INITIATIVE

18. March 2008, 20:28 | by WD Milner | Full Article |

The World Business Council for Sustainable Development, in partnership with IBM, Nokia, Pitney Bowes and Sony, have initiated an effort to have companies release patents to the public domain aimed at increasing innovations in environmental research and development.

The portfolio, called the "Eco-Patent Commons" is available on-line. The patents are focused on environmental matters and manufacturing and business processes where the solution provides an environmental benefit. The hope is that the availability of such patents will encourage researchers and businesses alike to develop and apply their products and processes in such a way as to help protect the environment.

Among the first thirty-one patents included in the portfolio are ways to recycle end-of-life cellular telephone components into new products and a method to use ozone gas as a replacement for liquid solvents as a surface cleaner.
